Article: An Introduction to Twitter

You don't have to spend very much time in the forums on Etsy to see several questions and posts about social networking site Twitter. What is Twitter, and how can you use it? I'm by no means a social networking expert, and I don't use MySpace or Facebook. I enjoy using Twitter because of its simplicity, and hopefully this article will give you the information necessary to start using Twitter as a valuable method in promoting your business.

What is Twitter?

From the Twitter main page, "Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"

Communication on Twitter is done in short, 140 character-limit posts called updates, or "tweets". Tweets are meant to be simple blurbs to your friends and "followers" about what you're doing. When you "follow" another Twitter user, you'll see all of his or her updates on the Twitter home page when you are logged on in order of most recent posting time.

But to be honest, Twitter would get old really fast if all anyone ever posted was simply what I'm doing....."I'm eating a turkey sandwich with potato chips in 10 minutes", or, "I leaving work now. Glad it's Friday!" While these types of tweets are nice and sometimes very entertaining to read, that 140-character limit can be used more effectively as a tool to bring traffic to your Etsy shop or blog, network quickly with people whose interests match yours, and as a free form of advertising.

How can you use Twitter?

If you look at the top-right corner of the screen shot, you'll see I'm currently following 186 people, and 169 people are following me. I've made 213 updates, or tweets, talking about everything from weather to blogging to Etsy. That means that 169 people currently see my updates. Not that 169 is a giganitc number considering some people have thousands, but the number grows everyday.

How did I get those followers? Like everyone else, I started with zero. I followed several people after seeing their responses in the Etsy forums concerning Twitter. I also looked at who they were following, and followed some of THOSE people as well after looking at their profiles. Then, most of the people I followed subsequently followed me back. I made sure I followed people that were interesting to me, that I liked their Etsy shop, blog, or website, and that also had a few followers.

I then stumbled upon the powerful search.twitter.com (not the same as "search" from the menu when you log in) to look for certain topics that interest me. This search looks for terms in anyone's Twitter updates. I searched for people using the keywords: Texas, runners, running, etsy, craft, cards, marketing, and blog, because these are the topics I'm interested in AND these are the people that are potentially in my target market for what I sell on Etsy and blog topics. I followed these people, and most of them followed me back.

Now that I have people following me that have similar interests and that hopefully will be interested in what I'm selling, I make sure to tweet when I list a new item on Etsy or add a new post on my blog to self-promote. I also spread the love by tweeting about sellers that I have good experiences with, neat things I find on Etsy, and other blogs that I think people will appreciate and enjoy. I like to use a 2:1 ratio of general fun/interest tweets to self-promoting tweets to mix it up.

Twitter is a fun, quick, and best of all easy way for to get yourself out there in front of people faster.

Friday Feature

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. Thanks for stopping by to check out this week's featured shop, Galacards.

1. Tell us about you and your shop.

My name is Vianney and I created Galacards in May 2007. I used to be a corporate accountant, after the birth of my second child my husband and I decided it was more important having a mommy at home with the kids opposed to a nanny. When I’m not designing cards I’m the PTO president at my son’s school and I’m a Boy Scout mommy.

2. How did you get started in your craft?

Cardmaking started off as a hobby as a way of working off stress from work. Once I left my job my hobby turned into an obsession. I also design & teach on occasion at a local stamp store, that further supports my habit. LOL

3. What is your favorite material or tool?

This is the part where my husband would say, “A favorite tool? She’s got a room FULL of them!” I love ALL my tools, my obsession is buying every tool possible, you name it I’m positive I have it. My current favorite tool would be my Paper Gator, as for materials I LOVE metallic cardstock. The one great thing about designing for a retail store is the opportunity to go to CHA and see and have all the latest and greatest.

4. Where do you get your design inspiration from?

Sometimes I’ll think of a specific shape or color and I’ll start playing with it until I come up with something I like. My husband is also my inspiration he’s got a great eye for designs and color combinations. I also enjoy reading craft magazines, I love seeing how others use techniques and combinations, I love getting my hands dirty and trying something new just for the fun of it.

Friday Feature

This week's featured artist is the very creative Heart Piercing Cards.

1. Tell us about you and your shop.

I am a fanciful twenty four year old with a super big heart and some lofty dreams. My ETSY shop, Heart Piercing Cards. is my most prized project; I like to think of the ETSY me as my doppelgänger---and I totally love her! She is a bit saucier than me, creative, playful, courageous and lacks the analytical, doubtful qualities I seems to have mastered. I started my shop in July after years of thinking about doing something with the hundreds of handmade cards that I'd come up with and given away over the years. I keep as many new cards in the shop as possible---I always have works in progress and I'm always looking for new techniques, new possibilities, new way to translate my thoughts onto paper.

2. How did you get started in your craft?

Note writing during my middle and high school days lead me to believe I actually had a special talent. Signing yearbooks turned into scrapbooking pages among my group of friends, so long ago I began leaving my mark with ink, paper, and glue and sending my legacy to mailboxes all over the world. It's one of my greatest joys---the handwritten letter---so naturally I was attracted to handmade cards. I started making them and not sending them (which is, btw, the hardest thing ever for me). After about two years of collecting cards, I decided I would conjure up the courage to see if they would sell on Etsy. I have sold almost 60 cards and really begun to develop "my" style. It's been a good road, and I hope it will be a long one, too.

3. What is your favorite material or tool?

I love adhesive. It comes in so many forms and serves so many great purposes! But it's a toss up: adhesive & old dictionaries. I can't get enough of either. The classic tattered black and white pages, modified to serve a new purpose and send a message are undoubtedly my favorite material. Adhesive is probably my favorite tool. It bonds my creations to paper, and you can't ask for much more than that!

4. Where do you get your design inspiration from?

I get inspiration from life, the way one gets seashells by walking along the shoreline. I write down quotes heard on the bus line, follow links on my favorite blogs, collect scrap paper everywhere I go, read old books and comb through my grandmother's collection of art supplies. I spend time with family and friends, really listening to them and gathering what sparks their passions. I eat great food and drink unordinary wines, savouring exotic and familiar tastes; I watch movies where woman wear big dresses, have lucious wigs atop their heads, and dance around with champagne flutes in hand; I dream in color and take notes that way too. All of these are inspirations that I translate into greeting cards that capture the ordinary and the unfamiliar in fanciful ways.

Friday Feature

This week's featured seller is randomscraps. You will find many beautiful cards here and a unique offering of a card club membership.

1. Tell us about you and your shop.

My name is Andi. I'm a stay at home mom of 3: Scott is 7, Sierra just turned 6, and Venice is 8 months. I maintain my Etsy shop, RandomScraps, full time. Each card (or set) I make is one of a kind, made from high quality scrapbook papers and embellishments. In addition, I also have a card membership club, called RandomCards. The idea is that you sign up for 6 months at a certain level, and then I send you an assortment of cards every month so you always have what you need.

2. How did you get started in your craft?

I have been scrapbooking for quite a few years, but not really making cards. I wanted to be able to stay home with my kids, especially once the baby was born, so I decided to start making cards. Once I found Etsy, I was set!

3. What is your favorite material or tool?

I love playing with all the product! New patterned papers, rub-ons or flowers make me really excited. My favorite product is whatever new item I've just picked up!

4. Where do you get your design inspiration from?

Everywhere! A lot of times it's a new product that inspires me, but I also get ideas from looking at other people's creations. Sometimes it's a treasury with an awesome color scheme, a layout posted on a blog, or a well designed advertisement. Anything can spark a new idea.

Friday Feature

This week's featured seller is Funny Ernie. If you are a pet lover, you'll definitely appreciate the cards here.

1. Tell us about you and your shop.

I am a design school graduate and ex-children’s apparel designer. I am now a stay at home mom to a 5 month old and my dog, Ernie. I’ve always been artistic and creative and often find myself starting a new project before I finish the one I’m already working on.

Funny Ernie consists of greeting and invitations for Mans Best Friend, however, they are well suited to the dog lover of the human kind as well.

2. How did you get started in your craft?

I created Funny Ernie after not being able to find birthday invitations for my dog that were a reflection of him. Funny Ernie has since evolved into several types of cards, including the original birthday invites. I was looking for a way to transfer my sketches onto the cards without the use of a computer and came across lithography. Now, my Funny Ernie sketches are turned into rubber stampes and printed by hand on each card.

3. What is your favorite material or tool?
My favorite mediums are charcoal and crayons. I’m a sucker for Crayola. I recently tried some collage work with scrap paper and loved it. That’s my new favorite medium.

4. Where do you get your design inspiration from?

My inspiration and muse is my dog, Ernie, who I rescued from the Humane Society on the Fourth of July, 2003. Ernie’s playmates also become my muses for cards as well.

Check out our website at www.funnyernie.com We can also be found at www.petsjubilee.com in their boxes.
