Friday Feature: Cheryloz

1. Tell us about you and your shop.
From as long as I can remember, I have always loved art. As a child, I would never be without my bag of Crayola markers and my sketchbook. All throughout school I studied art, and in 1998 I graduated from The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, majoring in Art Direction/Graphic Communications. Since then I've maintained a career in advertising -- until recently.
My true passion however, is my time spent in my home studio where I create all of the fun stuff I do for my Etsy store & blog. I enjoy watercolor & acrylic painting, drawing & sketching, needle-felting, paper crafting and so much more. At the end of the day, happiness for me is creating, and if my art makes someone else happy, that's the ultimate reward!

2. How did you get started in your craft?
I guess you could say I was born with it... because from as far back as I can remember I've always loved to create art. I suppose most children do, but I remember being very passionate about it at a very young age.
When asked as a child, I would always say I wanted to be an artist when I grew up... and finally I can say without reservation that is what I am.

3. What tool can you not live without?
Oh my gosh, without a doubt it's my Sanford Pro-Touch Mechanical Pencil. I've had it since my days in art school and I don't even think they make them anymore. I have two in case I lose one, but I'll be so sad if I do. I take it everywhere my sketchbook goes.

4. What inspires you?
I never know when inspiration will strike... so for me it can happen when I'm out and about enjoying life. I am lucky that I have a very supportive family, group of friends and especially my husband, Jeff and I think that in itself is truly inspirational.

5. Name one favorite item from your store.

Now typically I would say one of my watercolor illustrations, because really watercolor painting is my favorite thing to do... but recently I got into making a little jewelry out of polymer clay, acrylic paints and some Swarovski crystals, so I'm going to say my Berry Branch Fine Art Pendant. It would make a great Mother's Day gift!

2. How did you get started in your craft?
About six years ago, a coworker of mine (who had worked for product at a scrapbook store) randomly gave me tons of paper and embellishments, just for fun. I began tinkering with what she gave me and I loved it! I found a local scrapbook store and started taking classes to learn about the newest techniques and products. I then got my mom into the hobby… so now we’ve got a family affair (though now she has loads more crafty tools than I).

3. What tool can you not live without?
My crop-a-dile… hole punch, setter, hammer. I use lots of eyelets and punch lots of holes…so this tool is convenient and perfect for me! (though I see on amazon that it does snaps too? I didn’t even know that!)

4. What inspires you?
browsing the web. crafty paper magazines. team member’s pages. colors. paper design. seasons. mood.

5. Name one favorite item from your store.

This is an awesome "to do" book I created for all of you planners out there!

Friday Feature: Viva La France Design

1. Tell us about you and your shop.
My name is Kara LaFrance I am a fine artist and graphic designer. I've been dealing with a rare pituitary disease but finally have it under some control. I take that new found health and create whatever inspires me - cards or paintings or both. I'm sure the two intertwine but they are different and have a different process. Either way creating things make me joyful from the inside. I still have bad days and can't get anything done but my projects wait for me so no harm done. Once I was feeling up to it I opened my shop first with my paintings and art print notecards and then started adding the handmade/designed cards.

2. How did you get started in your craft?
I've been creating since I was a little girl and I've never stopped. Being chronically ill for so long I needed to try and focus on something so I started painting little watercolors and selling them locally in coffee shops and crafts shows. Then I started printing the watercolors and using them in cards. They did equally as well but, honestly, I became bored, so I went back to my large oil paintings, only making cards for my husband and getting my design fix from freelance projects. When I found etsy I started thinking about cards again.

3. What tool can you not live without?
It's a 3-fer Crops marks, my x-acto and metal ruler. The knife would do me no good without crop marks and straight edge. I hated when making our own mats was required in college!

4. What inspires you?
I can't put to words what inspiration for a painting feels like. I hope that inspiration is apparent in my paintings and no words are necessary.

My design is what ever it needs to be. I like my cards to be bold, quirky and honest sometimes just pretty. Maybe a word gets stuck in my head until I find the right pieces to put it into a card or I'll covet a lovely piece of paper and create a card because of it. Color inspires me.... paper inspires me.... nature inspires me.

5.Name one favorite item from your store

I do love how well the art prints cards turned out.
